Open discussion at SBS by Dr. V.G Patel holds on Success Mantras – Lessons from High Achievers

Dr. V.G Patel, founding Director of EDI and former economic advisor to GIDC, currently chairman of CERC, shared his experience and insights on entrepreneurship at the Open Discussion Series, Prerna, at the Shanti Business School, today. He spoke at length on his view of “success mantras” and lessons from high achievers. Every stage of life is an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and to gain an experience out of it, he said. Failure is always learning - you learn from it and start taking the challenge head-on. He brought out the fact that India has had planning capability but always struggled to execute its plans. To be a successful a entrepreneur there are many elements which are involved; also one person creates an opportunity but, to achieve a project there has to be a combined efforts of experts from respective domains critical to the project.

He also focused on what makes a successful entrepreneur. As per a World Research it’s not age, religion, caste, family, place, community which determines it but these 13 factors :

1. Initiative
2. Capitalizing on an opportunity
3. Persistence
4. Information seeking skills
5. Quality commitment
6. Commitment to work
7. Efficiency
8. Systematic Planning
9. Problem Solving capability
10. Self – Confidence
11. Assertiveness
12. Persuasion
13. Use of Influence Strategies
He concluded the session by sharing the 5 key elements which will not only make you a great
entrepreneur but also a person. They are: Work, Family, Health, Friends, and Spirit. All five are equally important if one has to a winner. Quoting a Coca Cola CEO, he said life is juggling the 5 balls - only the Work ball is made of rubber while the others are made of glass and do not bounce back, so be careful!

His session was peppered with anecdotal references and advice to the students, amongst which stood
out one of respect for their parents.
Debjyoti Sarkar, PGDM 2013-15 batch, said after the interaction: “I am an aspiring entrepreneur and this talk has been most insightful.”

Open Discussion on Economic Growth-'Make In India' campaign & Entrepreneurship

Shanti Business School (SBS) holds an Open Discussion on Economic Growth, “Make in India” Campaign and Entrepreneurship

Mr. Sunil Parekh, Founding.Curator of the World Economic Forum, Geneva for AGS initiative,  with a rich experience of 40 years, currently Board member and adviser with several  leading organizations and associations, led a highly engaging open discussion for students and faculty of Shanti Business School (SBS), Ahmedabad.

Mr. Parekh stated that Gujarat has witnessed one of the largest investments in the last ten years.  Manufacturing and ‘Make in India’ are the only ways government will be able to have growth that helps to eliminate poverty and generate ample work opportunities.Explaining entrepreneurship opportunities, Mr.Parekh stated that Gujarat is the only state in the country that has set up a seed fund to support development of entrepreneurial ideas. There are Nodal institutions approved by the State Government that evaluate and channelize the seed funding. There is no compulsion or obligation to give back the funding received at this stage as the objective is to spur ideas and experimentation in an entrepreneurial mode. One can then seek angel investors, VC investments and finally private
equity later.
Mr. Parekh addressing the four major pillars of 'Make In India' campaign'

Mr. Parekh said, “ The “Make in India” campaign works on four major pillars, i.e. facilitating Foreign Direct Investment, protecting Intellectual Property, fostering Digital Initiative and building  manufacturing.” This would assist in skill enhancement and job creation in twenty-five sectors of the economy, with consequent increase in GDP and tax profits.

Further guiding young, potential entrepreneurs, Mr. Parekh insisted that “Startups must be led by ability and passion and not just by intention to make profit irrespective of the business.Mr. Parekh informed that though there is no foolproof way to protect  an idea by an individual, to his knowledge there have been only 2 cases of idea pilferation; seed funders, angel investors and VCs are all part of an ecosystem that works on mutual trust and common objectives of growing the idea, not
stealing it.

Shanti Business School (SBS) hosted a ‘Garba Night’ for its faculty, staff and students. The event was indeed a grand affair of colors, beats and frolic, but also remarkably different as it brought
together people from different cultural backgrounds.

The students had a gala time, in the sparkly night playing to the tunes of Garba . The charming Dandiya fest of Gujarat has gained a universal appeal due to its simple and energy-packed dance moves. SBS has students from different states of India such as Rajasthan, Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kolkata and even from Nepal.

Suraj Jallan, student of PGDM from Assam, said, “I love the way everyone dances in synchronicity. I am surprised to know there are a number of dance forms within Garba which all seem to flow as one.”

Vivid costumes, lively music and inescapable laughter are what made this event a spectacular treat to the eyes. Observed in its most elaborated form, SBS’ Garba Night was an invigorating event, not to have been missed!

The event started with an aarti conducted by our faculty and followed by the Garba dance routines. “I am delighted to watch a thorough Garba performance, lasting for nine days. In Kolkata, we celebrate it for just four days while celebrations are restricted to just prayers offered to the deity. Whereas here, it is a mix of rituals and lots of dance, I had a gala time.” Sanjiv Mishra, PGDM student
from Kolkata, West Bengal, shared excitedly.

Sandesh Phuyal, from Nepal, BBA student, said, “Nepal’s national festival is celebrated for ten days. Though duration of the festival is the same, it is not accompanied by dance. I attended Garba for the second time now, as I wanted to indulge in all the dancing and fun.”
